What is a Baby Naming Ceremony?

A humanist naming ceremony is a modern twist on a traditional christening or baptism - the meaning and importance of the ceremony are exactly the same and we officially give your child or children, their name/s.

A baby naming ceremony focuses on your baby or toddler, we tell the story of their journey in life so far. How you as parents discovered that they were on the way, their arrival, and the milestones that they have reached so far in their lives.

Baby naming ceremonies are perfect for families who want to celebrate in a non-religious way. A naming ceremony also provides the opportunity for those gathered to reflect on the new addition to the world and for Guide Parents and you as parents to make pledges and promises to your little one.

Who are baby naming ceremonies for?

Naming ceremonies are perfect for newborns or toddlers and can also be combined with a first birthday celebration - who doesn't love a cake smash! However they don’t have to be just for young children. They can be celebrated at any point.

They can also be the perfect way to welcome adopted children or step-children of any age into a family. Some couples even choose to have a baby naming ceremony at their wedding. This is so wonderful if babies have arrived before the marriage, or the marriage includes the blending of two families.

Where can a baby naming ceremony take place?

Naming ceremonies can be conducted absolutely anywhere - at home, outdoors in a favourite park, or local town hall or a church that welcomes non-religious ceremonies. Each baby naming ceremony is unique. 

They often include music, poems, readings, parental promises to your child, the appointment of Guide Parents and their promises and the signing of a cetificate.
